Sportsmanship Award
The Sportsmanship award is not an event but method to promote positive
behavior from the participants. In general, the judges and
administrators are going to practice the old adage of “catch
‘em at being good.” The judges and administrators
will pass out “tokens” when they believe a team or an
individual has exhibited good sportsmanship. This may be take
place in the form of general courtesy, being helpful, cleaning up at
the end of an event, etc. Participants may not ask for such a
token. Instead, tokens will be awarded when the judge or
administrator feels compelled. The main ideas are summarized
below:
- All coaches must notify Dr. Ferguson at t-shirt pickup about the
exact number of children (core and alternate teams ) who will be at the
Olympiad.
- Participants will be rewarded for good sportsmanship.
- In order to aid in identifying schools, all participants will wear their schools’ team letter on their sleeve.
- The participant will receive tokens for exhibiting positive behavior.
- After receiving tokens, the participants will turn them in at the
Science Olympiad headquarters in MC 231 where the tokens will be placed
in school specific container (cup). At the end of the day, the
tokens from each school will be counted.
- The school with the greatest number of points based on the number
of tokens earned in relation to the number of team members and
alternates will be announced the winner. (number of tokens divided by
the total number of students on core and alternate teams)
- Other schools with a high point average will be recognized at the award ceremony.
